Over time, it can become easy to let things slip through the cracks as you’re trying to manage other aspects of life or caring for another family member who requires attention. Spring cleaning is important, but daily and weekly cleaning is important too. This checklist is designed to help family members ensure that their loved one’s room stays clean and organized.
Dust Surfaces Weekly
Dusting should be done weekly for all surfaces in your loved one’s room—including table tops, bookcases, and shelves. Use a damp cloth or vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters if possible (HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air). This will help pull out more debris from the air and prevent it from circulating the house after you’ve cleaned it up—or if you’re going in with just a damp rag, you’ll be removing more of those particles than usual too!
Change Bedding Every Other Week
When you change the sheets and pillow cases, be sure to wash them first with soap and water before using them again. Make sure you do this at least once weekly so that any lingering bacteria have enough time to die off on their own before being introduced into the rest of your family’s belongings.
Sweep and Mop the Floor Weekly
If you want to ensure your cleaning efforts are practical, use a damp mop and clean the mop head or vacuum attachment on the area first. This will help lift dirt and debris right off of the floor so that they don’t get trapped in any rugs or carpets that may be present in this space.
Vacuum the Rugs and Carpeting Weekly
Use a vacuum with a rotating brush attachment weekly on rugs and carpeting. The rotating brush will help remove bacteria, dust mites, and other allergens that can collect in your loved one’s environment.
Wipe Down Hard Floors with a Damp Mop Weekly
Use a safe cleaning solution for your loved one and a mop with a long handle or sponge head to clean the floor. The longer the handle, the easier it is to reach all corners of the room.
Wash Windows Monthly
There are a variety of ways to clean windows.
- Use a squeegee: For streak-free cleaning, always use a squeegee.
- Use window cleaning solution: Make sure you get the correct answer for your specific type of window so that you don’t damage them by using something else!
- Don’t forget about safety when washing windows–especially if they’re high up! Make sure your ladder is sturdy before leaning on it.
Clean The Bathroom Daily or As Needed
This includes cleaning the toilet and sink, wiping down the counter, removing any trash or debris that may have accumulated on the floor (and rinsing out mop water if you’re using one), and sweeping if necessary.
Empty Trash Cans Daily or As Needed
If you don’t empty your loved one’s trash cans, they will smell and become a breeding ground for bugs. Empty them in the morning, so it doesn’t distract the person from their day-to-day activities later in the day. If you don’t have time to do this yourself, ask a friend or neighbor to help.
