When you were younger, did you enjoy an occasional glass of wine? It’s the perfect accompaniment for certain meals, but it’s also nice to just kick back, relax, and sip a glass now and then. Wine is especially nice when you want to make special moments even more so. As you have aged, however, it may have been brought to your attention that you need to keep an eye on certain dietary restrictions.
You might be watching your salt intake, for one, if you have high blood pressure, are at risk for a stroke, or have (or are at risk for) heart disease. You also may be nearing (or have already reached) the point of being diabetic. In that case, you need to keep a close eye on your sugar intake.
We have good news for you: Even if you’re watching your sugar, you don’t have to give up on wine! Today, you can enjoy a low-sugar wine just like you used to with a more traditional selection. We’re going to recommend a list of low-sugar wines for you to experiment with.
What Is Low-Sugar Wine?
Wine considered low sugar has low carbs and minimal residual sugar. A relatively dry wine is usually implied here. Specifically, however, some producers also make wines intentionally low in sugar and carbs.
If you had to choose a low-sugar wine for a special moment, could you? Let’s check out some selections and how to choose.
How To Choose A Low-Sugar Wine
Without recommending a specific brand, here’s what to look for:
- The sugar content on a general wine label, to be considered “low”, would be under 10 g/L
- Go for sugar content of less than 1 g/L if you want to purchase sugar-free wine
Keep in mind that the label on a bottle of wine doesn’t always contain the alcohol and sugar level. Here are a number of other things to consider:
- Steer clear of wines whose label specifies demi-sec, semi-sec, or dolce.
- Stay away from fortified or late harvest wine bottles that have high alcohol and sugar.
- Whenever possible, avoid cheap wines that contain sulfites, added sugar, and are mass-produced.
- Opt for white or red dry wines, Extra Brut Champagne, wines that are Brut Nature, and sparkling wines.
Best Sources of Low-Sugar Wines
Without specifying a brand, here are the best ways to enjoy wine considered low sugar…
- Pinot Grigio
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Pinot Noir
